Compost is applied in spring or autumn
When to use the compost
There is much disagreement over the best time to apply the mature substrate. For many generations, compost has been applied in the autumn. But even in spring, the compost can be used. Both times have their advantages and disadvantages.
autumn
In autumn, the leaves fall from the trees. They form a natural protective layer for the soil, which is full of dead plant parts. Over the winter, the material rotted and offers in the spring the germinating plants a nutrient-rich surface. This cycle will guide you through the application of compost.
advantages
Over the winter, compost freezes on the ground, killing parasites and pathogens. The frost breaks up coarser substrate components and the compost is fine and crumbly in spring. This soil is directly available to the plants during the coming vegetation period.
disadvantage
Autumn and winter rainfall can wash out nutrients from the compost substrate if the soil is unable to absorb the water. The substances settle in depressions and oversaturate the soil. In autumn many seeds of aggressive plants try to germinate. Even in winter, plants continue to grow near the bed. These seedlings and plants use the nutrients and minimize the nutrient content of the soil.
spring
Spring is a sub-optimal time for spreading compost. Despite the advantages, the negative aspects outweigh and you have to work the soil before spreading to get an ideal substrate.
advantages
The concentration of nutrients is highest when applied in spring, as they have not been washed out by precipitation or consumed by other plants. Direct incorporation in spring ensures a uniformly composted area.
disadvantage
The consistency of the fresh earth is firmer. Compost compost from thermo composters can contain many pathogens and pests that have wintered in the warm milieu. These unwanted organisms are applied to the bed with the substrate. If you want to sow early-morning vegetables, you'll need to apply the compost early in the year. This increases the risk of nutrient leaching when it rains heavily.
