Tomatoes and cucumbers in the same greenhouse - can that work?
Tomatoes like a sunny and rather cool location. Cucumbers prefer a tropical, humid-warm climate. The question arises whether both types of vegetables in the same greenhouse harmonize with each other? We explain how the horticultural feat succeeds.
Minimum requirements for the appropriate greenhouse
So that the cultivation of tomatoes and cucumbers under one roof has any chance of success, the greenhouse should be such:
The windows should account for 10 percent and more of the total roof and wall area. Otherwise, the temperature rises in the summer to 50 degrees Celsius and higher under sunlight, which means at least for your tomato farming the end.
Subdivision into two climates
On the sunny side of the greenhouse, lay the bed of tomato plants. So that the deep root thrive well, loosen the soil two spades deep. Over-showering of the soil with horsetail broth prevents fungal infections. This is followed by a generous portion of compost and horn shavings, so that the heavy drinkers find enough food. At a pH below 6 will also be limed.
On the side facing away from the sun, you put a manure heater in the ground for the cucumbers. The bed is dug two spade lengths deep. The pit is filled with a mixture of compost, manure and straw. Plan 5 to 8 kilos per plant. Garden earth is distributed over it. While the straw rots, the heat required for successful cucumber cultivation develops.
To effectively separate the two climate zones, the craftsman in the gardener is a bit challenged. Using battens, greenhouse foil, and a tacker, construct a dividing wall that hangs from the struts of the hothouse.
