Hedges as privacy shields: evergreen and easy to clean
Today, there are many artificial and durable materials that can be considered for the installation of an effective and also reasonably aesthetic privacy screen. Nevertheless, many gardeners still prefer the special charm of a natural screen of evergreen shrubs and hedgerows.
Evergreen plants for a sight protection hedge
The decisive criterion of an evergreen sight protection hedge is the fact that it provides a consistent visual protection throughout the year and is not transparent, for example, by a deciduous fall in autumn. Therefore, the beech trees used for hedge planting are usually counted in this category, although their leaves turn brown already in autumn. As the leaves remain hanging on the branches until spring, as in some privet species, these are not really evergreen, strictly speaking, but they are still sufficiently opaque to the point of new shootings. Advantages and disadvantages of cherry laurel as an evergreen hedge plant
In comparison to the other hedge trees, the cherry laurel has been increasingly present as a plant species in the new plantings of sight hedges over the last few years. This may not least be due to the fact that new cultivars are more and more resistant to winter even in our latitudes and thus also young plants are no longer so easily absorbed by winter frosts. Cherry orchard hedges also offer particularly good nesting possibilities for native songbirds and thus make an important contribution to nature conservation in your own garden. You should only be cautious when planting a cherry laurel hedge along a wall or in a particularly exposed slope: very pronounced temperature changes between day and night can be a problem for the different species of cherry laurel during the winter months.
Evergreen for the sight protection hedge: the boxwood
Formerly, the boxwood with its bushy stunted growth was very common in Central Europe. However, various diseases and pests such as the boxwood fungus are increasingly causing problems for the plants. Since this fight is difficult to win, you should prefer to switch to other types of evergreen hedge plants in case of doubt.
Tips
Beware of bare-root purchased plants: These should only be planted under really suitable weather conditions and at the recommended planting time. Less problematic succeeds the critical growth phase of various hedgerows when plants are bought with a root ball or in appropriate plant containers.
