Plant sloe: Keep root outlets in check

The blackthorn with its impressive flowers and the autumnal fruit decoration is an ornament in the garden. Due to the sprouting root shoot, the pretty thorn bush can develop into a problem in some locations.

The blackthorn loves dry soil

Sloe prefer a sunny spot in the garden. Dryness is far better tolerated by the shrub than too much moisture. The wild fruit shrubs prefer loose soil that should be rich in nutrients, permeable and calcareous. Even with stony ground, the frugal blackthorn gets along well. The ideal pH of the soil is 6 - 8.5.

Plant the blackthorn properly

You can put sloes all year round. The best planting time for container plants is the spring and the fall, root products should always be planted in the fall. If you are planning a sloe hedge, you will need to plan two sloes per meter as a plot boundary.

Set limits to the root shoots

Since sloes can reach a height of three meters, they are not suitable for planting other trees. Note already during the planting, that the thorny shrub spreads through Wurzelausläufer. Garden owners often complain that they have a lot of trouble with the rootthrow of the blackthorn, as it can form up to ten meters in length.

So that you do not have to dig up the roots after a few years or even remove the shrub, it is recommended to keep the sprouting growth in the desired frame by means of a root barrier. Recommended for this are in the ground introduced concrete manhole rings with fifty centimeters deep.

Evergreen shrubs keep the blackthorn small

Due to the extensive root system, the blackthorn is ideal if you want to attach a slope. If it is not possible for reasons of garden design to introduce a root restriction into the soil, you can also keep the blackthorn small by competing plants and regular pruning. Best suited for this are evergreen and rapidly growing deciduous shrubs such as the yew or the cherry laurel.
