Sage increase by offshoot - it works like clockwork
One of the numerous beneficial attributes of sage is the uncomplicated propagation. With the method by offshoot the bar is particularly low. The following instructions explain step by step how to succeed.
Sage head cuttings - powerful offspring for reproduction
Just before flowering, the vibrant life in the sage pulsates. This is especially true for the herbaceous shoot tips of the evergreen subshrubs. Consequently, head cuttings offer themselves as the most powerful offspring of the Mediterranean herb plant. So the multiplication succeeds effortlessly:
An inverted transparent hood creates a moist, warm microclimate that promotes rooting. In the following 2-3 weeks, the substrate must not dry out. As soon as the roots grow out of the bottom opening and a fresh shoot emerges, the hood has fulfilled its task. Once the young sage has completely rooted its pot, it is ready to be planted at the chosen location.
Use the power of the mother plant cleverly for offshoots
Propagation by means of a sinker leaves the parent plant to supply the offspring. How easy this method works, we explain here step by step:
While the mother plant supplies the offspring with nutrients in the following weeks, a new root system develops in the furrow. If a new blade appears at the tip and if you feel a slight backlash, the rooting is successful. After separating from the mother plant, dig up the young plant and plant at the new location.
Tips & Tricks
The sparrow among hobby gardeners transform a disused PET bottle into a mini-greenhouse for sage cuttings. For this purpose, the soil is cut off and the bottle slipped over the seed pot. To ventilate, simply unscrew the lid, pick up the bottle to pour.
