Plant pistachio tree in Germany
Pistachios are imported to Germany mainly from Turkey and the USA. In the country itself, it is difficult to cultivate pistachio trees in the field and harvest pistachios. The trees grow in nature in very dry and hot desert areas.
Problems with fresh seeds
Even the sowing of a pistachio tree is difficult. The commercially available cores are mostly treated and not fresh enough. Pistachio seeds germinate only when they are fresh.
Anyone who wants to plant a pistachio tree in Germany, must either get the seed in a mail-order business for exotic seeds or bring it back from vacation.
If you are lucky enough to find pistachio trees nearby, you can cut cuttings. For safety's sake, you should use cuttings from several trees to obtain male and female plants.
Pistachio trees need a lot of heat
The biggest problem with pistachio cultivation is the climatic conditions. Almost nowhere in Germany is it permanently as warm and dry as in the countries of origin.
Pistachios do not tolerate low temperatures for a long time. In the field they are therefore poorly cultivated. Older plants that are in a favorable location survive cold winters with frost protection.

In the greenhouse, the climatic conditions for the rearing can be fulfilled rather. There, however, the trees with one to three meters remain rather small.
In nature, pistachio trees reach a height of up to 25 meters. They can live up to 300 years.

If you still want to try planting one or more pistachio trees, look for a protected location.
Harvest pistachios from your own tree
If the growth of the tree succeeds, you need a little patience. At least three years pass before you can harvest the first pistachios. The drupes need several months after flowering until they are ready for harvest.
Tips & Tricks
If you want to harvest pistachios, you need at least a female and a male plant. The pollination is done by the wind. When keeping in the greenhouse you can try to pollinate the flowers with a brush.
