Phlox is not just Phlox - the different varieties
Phlox is so versatile that it can find a place in virtually every garden. You will find the phlox as an annual or perennial, tall or creeping groundcover. Since the choice is certainly not easy.
Perennial phlox
Among the perennial varieties of the phlox you will find both perennial phlox and soil-covering varieties. What they all have in common is that they are hardy. Some varieties need more protection from the sun during this time than from the cold. Perennial phlox can be multiplied well by division.
One-year phlox
From the annual Phlox, also called summer phlox, there are many variants. They usually do not grow as tall as the perennial shrub phlox and, in contrast to this, are of course not hardy. For the one-year Phlox you will find a particularly large selection of flower colors and shapes, such as star-shaped or multi-colored flowers.
Perennial phlox
The large-leaved phlox (Phlox amplifolia) is one of the more robust varieties. It tolerates both heat and partial shade and can cope even with a longer dry period. Particularly noteworthy is its good resistance to mildew, Älchen and other diseases and upholstery phlox (Phlox douglaasi). They are not only suitable for rockeries and Beetränder but due to their low growth and for grave planting. The soil should be rather sandy and well drained for these varieties. They bloom about in May and June.
Also, the migrating phlox (Phlox stolonifera) is not very large with up to 30 cm in height. He tolerates light shadows and a moist soil best. If he is too shady, he will not bloom extensively. Phlox stolonifera spreads relatively rapidly through foothills. It flowers from April to June.
