Methods for Propagation of Peppermint
Peppermint can also be propagated by sowing seeds. However, propagation is easier if you cut head cuttings, dig out foothills or simply divide the root balls of large plants.
The different methods of propagation
Sow peppermint
Seeds are available from specialist retailers or you leave the flowers in the summer for fertilization. In the fall you can shake off the seeds.
Sowing is best done in the spring on the windowsill or after the Eisheiligen in the field. Peppermint is a light germ, so you must not cover the seeds with soil.
Propagation by head cuttings
This method is especially popular because it is so easy. In June or July, cut off the desired number of cuttings from very vigorous plants. The shoots should be between eight and ten inches long and have at least four pairs of leaves.
Put the cuttings in potting soil mixed with potting soil and sand. Keep it nice and moist but not wet. Often you can put them in the desired location in autumn.
Excavate foothills
Peppermint tends to spread over foothills. To create a new peppermint bed, dig out the stems and plant them in the desired location. This works for almost the whole garden year without problems.
Share root balls
What you may already know from other perennials in the garden also works with peppermint. If a plant has become very large, you can divide it and thus gain two or more peppermint plants.
To do this, you release the root ball of peppermint. Use a sharp spade to prick the plant in two or, in the case of very large bales, into several parts. Make sure that there are enough roots and shoots on each section.
Put the so increased plants to the new location. The best time to divide the perennials is early autumn.
Tips & Tricks
You should never use peppermint in the herb bed. The herb does not mix well with many other herbs. In addition, peppermint tends to proliferate, so they quickly crushed the other plants in the bed.
