In spring, the mostly white, pink or purple, large flowers of magnolia can be seen from afar. The family of magnolia plants - originally native to Asia and the North American continent - comprises about 230 different species, which differ greatly in terms of their stature height, flower shape and flowering time. The lush flowering usually lasts about 14 days, with some trees blooming a second time later.
Summer flowering magnolia less susceptible to frost
The advantage of late flowering magnolia varieties is their lower sensitivity to early spring frosts. These late frosts are the nightmare of any proud magnolia owner, as they often bring an abrupt end to the wonderful blooms of flowers overnight. The result is frozen, brown leaves and flowers. With a summer magnolia, this mishap will not happen to them.
Tips & Tricks
Do not despair if your magnolia planted in the fall does not want to bloom yet. Only a few specimens bloom in the first two years of existence. Some varieties even take up to 10 years to flower first.
