Cutting back autumn raspberries - A little guide!
Autumn raspberries bear the most fruit on annual wood. Very few raspberries grow on biennial rods. In autumn, therefore, a complete pruning is announced. But even in summer cutting is one of the nursing measures.
Cut back autumn raspberries in autumn
Autumn raspberries are particularly easy to care for, especially with regard to the right pruning. Unlike summer raspberries, you do not need to remember which one year old and two year old one.
Since autumn raspberries already produce their main harvest on the annual shoots, you can simply cut off all shoots in autumn to near the ground.
The shrub drifts again in the spring and produces fruits on the new rods in the same year.
Biological protection against pests
Experienced gardeners advise you to leave some of the rods on the ground when cutting down the autumn raspberries.
They serve as winter quarters for beneficial insects such as predatory mites. In spring, these valuable garden helpers settle back on the plant and kill spider mites and other pests.
Care of autumn raspberries by pruning in the summer
Some varieties of autumn raspberries tend to develop a great many rods.
As a result, the fruits do not get enough light. They stay small and are not nearly as sweet as the raspberries that have ripened in the sun.
For heavily-awake varieties, cut them in the summer to make sure the shrub does not grow too closely. A maximum of 15 rods should remain on the plant. The rest just cut off.
Remove or shorten weak shoots
Autumn raspberry shoots that appear very weak or even infested with diseases or pests should be removed regularly.
They do not develop fruits and weaken the root unnecessarily.
If the rods of autumn raspberries shoot too high, you can shorten them at any time. The plant does not mind the pruning.
