Plant embankment and secure
Slopes often give home gardeners a headache. But that does not have to be the case: As a special design element, embankments can be beautifully integrated into the garden and fastened with plants, stones and other things. The following describes how you can plant your embankment and which plants and elements can be used for particularly steep slopes.
Secure the embankment
An embankment can be fixed with different elements. Plants are a very effective variant, but it only shows its effects when the plants have grown well. These elements help to attach the slope:
Create terraces
For very steep slopes, pure planting will not be enough. Instead, it makes sense to create terraces by letting in horizontally low walls at regular intervals in the ground. A cheap and beautiful option to offer natural stones, gabions are also popular because of the ease of installation. If you have wood or branches, you can fix the slope with boards or woven fences.

An invisible variant is the use of plant mats. These are spread over the slope and on the sides, e.g. secured by stones. Then holes are cut to the places where plants are to be set. To cover the plant mat until the plants have spread, you can cover them with gravel or mulch.
Plant an embankment
Which plants are best suited to the slope depends mainly on the inclination and the orientation of the sky. While practically everything can be cultivated on flat slopes, especially deep-rooted shrubs and bushes should be cultivated on very steep slopes, which cling to the slope and thus prevent erosion.
Useful is a combination of shrubs and ground cover, as ground cover form a kind of network and thus also protect the embankment from erosion.
Deep-rooted shrubs for steep slopes
For the slope planting different shrubs and shrubs are possible. When making your choice, pay attention to the desired height of growth and the preferences regarding the location. If you put sun-hungry bushes in shady locations, they will grow poorly and possibly even die. On the other hand, shadow-loving plants burn in the blazing sun.
