Set raspberries properly - guaranteed rich harvest!
Raspberries are quite easy to put in the garden. Great previous knowledge is not necessary for this. Make sure you have a favorable location and prepare the soil optimally.
Summer raspberries or autumn raspberries - or both?
If you want to harvest fresh raspberries for many weeks, you should put both varieties. But create a separate series for each variety.
Summer raspberries are more abundant, need more care and are often attacked by maggots. Pulling autumn raspberries is less time-consuming and the problem of maggots disappears. The harvest is usually not quite as lush.
If you have limited space in the garden, you can also choose so-called two-timer raspberries, which bear fruit twice a year.
The right place to put raspberries
In a sunny, airy location, raspberries thrive best. There, the fruits are bigger and sweeter. An airy space also prevents diseases and pest infestation.
A bed on which previously other berry bushes have stood is not suitable. Keep your distance from other beds or plants.
It depends on the right soil preparation
The floor must be loosened as deeply as possible. Remove all thickening such as old roots and stones. This prevents waterlogging that does not get the raspberries.
Keep the plant weed free. Work compost, rotten manure or peat.
Note planting distance
Raspberries should not be too dense. This promotes the spread of mushrooms.
Plant raspberries in a row at least 50 centimeters apart. Between several rows you should leave 1.50 meters space.
The insertion of the plants
Put the plants only about five centimeters deep into the ground. Do not press the earth too hard.
Install a scaffold where you can tie the raspberry plant rods.
Tips & Tricks
Raspberry perennials from retailers are usually supplied as container plants. Before putting these plants in the ground, you should first put them in a bucket filled with water for a few hours. The roots then suck well and grow faster.
