A fig tree as a houseplant
Both the fruit-bearing real fig trees and the fake figs, which bribe through their beautiful dark green foliage, are suitable for indoor culture. In a bright and warm space in the apartment, fig figs such as the birch fig or the violin fig grow well even without the proverbial green thumb and are therefore often found in offices. The optimal location
The fig grows particularly well on a sunny window or in the conservatory. If it is a true fig, you should note that the woody plants also hibernate in their southern home and discard the foliage. In the cold season, it is therefore advisable to give the fig a slightly cooler place in the apartment. Ideal are temperatures of about ten degrees.
The suitable substrate
Figs thrive well in commercially available potting soil or potting soil, which they loosen up with sand or fine-grained gravel. Because figs are very sensitive to waterlogging, put a drainage layer of clay granules into the plant pot.
Many figs also grow well in hydroponics, because no waterlogging can form in the special granules and the plants are optimally supplied with moisture and nutrients.
Pour with instinct
Figs are sensitive not only to waterlogging, but also to the complete drying out of the root ball. Soil dryness quits the fig first with the dropping of the fruits and afterwards with a partial loss of the foliage. Therefore, always water when the surface of the earth feels dry and pour away excess water in the coaster. At most in the warm summer months, you can leave a small supply of water for a few hours.
During the winter months you should reduce the watering. However, the fig tree should not completely dry out.
Figs are sensitive to hard water
Pour the fig with soft water. Use tap water or rainwater in regions containing lime water. Alternatively, you can leave the irrigation water for a few hours so that the lime settles.
Fertilizing the room fig
