Fig tree loses leaves
Figs belong to the foliage-breaking woody plants. If the fig loses all leaves in autumn, this is completely normal. However, if the plant discards the leaves that have been newly expelled in the spring during the growth phase, this is mostly due to care mistakes or plant diseases.
These could be reasons for sheet losses:
Lack of water leads to leaf shedding
High heat and lack of water make also the heat-loving fig to create. The plant no longer manages to supply the leaves with enough water, the leaves dry from the edge to the middle and finally fall off.
So, water fig trees regularly in the summer months. For free-range figs, it has been proven to lavishly leach the trees. Buckthorn figs always need water when the earth feels dry. However, do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
Trigger can be a viral disease
Very many figs are carriers of the mosaic virus. Above all, young leaves turn yellow, show malformations on the leaf lobes and fall off in the sequence. Responsible for the outbreak of plant disease is stress caused by wet weather conditions or excessive watering.
Always put a drainage layer in the bucket or the planting hole of the fig tree and avoid waterlogging. Once the fig returns to good growing conditions, it forms healthy, new foliage.
Mushrooms as the cause of leaf loss
Rust mushrooms show up as small, red-brown and slightly raised spots on the fig leaf. The mushroom mycelium pervades the entire leaf and deprives the fig of many nutrients. The foliage dies and is discarded.
Treat rust at the first sign and remove any affected leaves. Collect already fallen leaves carefully. Dispose of the plant parts in the household waste, as rust fungi survive during composting. Inject the fig afterwards with a suitable fungicide.
Possible cause: nutrient deficiency
Rolling the leaves from the leaf edge and subsequent discarding of the leaves indicates potassium deficiency. A balanced whole fertilizer for figs must contain the nutrients sodium, phosphorus and potash in the ratio 1 - 2 - 3.
Tips & Tricks
If the plant suffers from a lack of nutrients you should not increase the fertilizer intake, since the fig first needs its strength for regeneration. During the growth phase, continue to fertilize once a week and change only the product.
