When it comes to the planting of trees, different opinions collide again and again. However, if you keep a few points in mind, planting may even be beneficial to the apple tree.

Of course, an apple tree is easier to reach during regular pruning or when harvesting apples, when there is only grass or soil right around the trunk. Especially for specimens, which were refined as a high strain on a substrate, but it can be visually beautiful, if there is a growth of other plants around the trunk. However, care should be taken that they are not very draining plants that extract too many nutrients and too much water in the area of the tree disc. Perennial shrubs with a pruning in autumn are therefore also suitable for this purpose, as then fallen fruit around the trunk can be easily removed as a protection against fungal attack.
From low to high
Basically, there are not many limits to the fantasy of planting. However, most apple varieties tend to form shallow roots, which is why no very deep-rooted perennials should be planted directly in the area of the tree slice. If you want to plant a towering rambler rose on the apple stem, it should be planted in the ground area at least half a meter from the trunk. Otherwise, it also protects against injuries to the fine hair roots of the apple tree, if a layer of loose humus or compost is first applied to the tree disc. Many flowering shrubs do not root very deep, but you increase the water requirement in the area of the garden. This should be considered when watering the apple tree in summer.
Suitable varieties for planting in the apple tree
Berry bushes such as currant are known to keep voles and other rodents as pests away from the apple tree roots with their specific odor. The following flowers are rather undemanding and sow well even under shady treetops:
In addition, plants such as nasturtium and rhubarb have the advantage that they provide regularly as a so-called live mulch around the tree trunk for rotting plant parts. This way, you sometimes save yourself the hassle of getting compost as fertilizer.
Tips & Tricks
In spite of the planting, look for foul fruits around the tree trunk. Only removing these from the perennials of the planting plant certainly helps to preserve the tree vitality by preventing mildew and other diseases.
